Pulmonary tuberculosis in children

A detailed examination revealed that she has pneumonia below the lower lobe. Detailed history revealed that he had contact with a maid suffering from TB. Her tuberculin skin test was negative and sputum could not be obtained. She responded to a 6-month course of anti-TB drugs.

Stomach tuberculosis in kids

AJ is a 6-year-old child with recurrent abdominal pain, poor weight gain, intermittent fever. Various medicines were given to him by various doctors but there was no improvement. Her investigations revealed that there was an increase in ESR, lesions in the chest x-ray, swelling of the abdominal lymph node. Whereas, he did not have a sputum or biopsy of lymph nodes for examination, he was diagnosed with TB. She responded well to a course of anti-TB drugs in 6 months.

Brain tuberculosis in kids

There is a 7 year old boy who has fever, headache and vomiting symptoms for two months. A year ago his father was undergoing treatment for TB. By the time of recruitment, the child had developed Altered Sensorium, Grade 2 coma, and convulsions. Her head cat scan revealed multiple tuberculomas (TB tumors in the brain). In addition he had skin tests positive for TB, increased ESR, and chest X-rays indicating tuberculosis. This case of cerebral tuberculosis was successfully treated for 9 months and he recovered completely.

BCG vaccination :- Every newborn in our country should be given a BCG vaccine. Although the BCG vaccine is not completely effective against pulmonary TB symptoms, it does provide better protection against more serious diseases such as miliary TB or meningitis TB.

Drug treatment of TB Symptoms

  • It is very important that TB is diagnosed and treated early in children.
  • Properly implemented short course chemotherapy (SCC) is the preferred treatment in modern times.
  • Major drugs for TB include isoniazid, rifampicin, porazinamide, streptomycin, ethambutol, and thiacetone.
  • Now the short course chemotherapy (DOTS) is being given more importance.
