What is Arthritis

The word ‘arthritis’ means ‘inflammation of joints’. It comes from two Greek words, atbron meaning joints. It is meaning inflammation. In the first stage, the whole body is involved and one or two joints may become complete deformed, the patient is handicapped and somewhat weakness.

There are two categories of joints, namely, synarthrosis or those which do not move very much and do not have a cavity and diarthrosis or those which move freely and have a joint cavity. The first type joints are found in the head and spinal column. The second type is most affected by arthritis, is more common and is found in the wrists, knees, elbows, shoulders, toes, ankles and fingers.

Types of Arthritis

Arthritis assumes various forms, the most frequent being Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis. Inflammation is the main features of arthritis. Which is a reaction of the joint tissues to some form of damage or injury.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a joint disease which occurs in the older age. This disease is more in women than in men. The disease started from structural changes in the cartilage in the joints. Joints which are weight-bearing such as the knees and spine. The chief symptoms of osteoarthritis are stiffness and pain in the joints. The pain usually increases after exercise.

Causes and symptoms of Osteoarthritis

Symptoms include watery eyes, leg cramps, allergies, arteriosclerosis, impairment in the functioning of the gall-bladder and liver disturbances. The possible causes include obesity, calcium deficiency, malnutrition, glandular insufficiency, shortage of hydrochloric acid and continuous physical stress.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is very dangerous disease which affects not only the joints of the wrists, knees, hips, feet and fingers but also the tendons, muscles and other tissues of the body. The disease can be at any time from childhood to old age but this appears between the age 30 and 52. It is many times more common in women than men. The disease is by inflammation process of the lining of the joints and synovium with the eventual deformity and swelling.

This disease called the “cooked food disease”. It is develops slowly over several months with persistent stiffness and pain in one or more joints. Ultimately the whole body is affect.

Causes and symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Symptoms include constipation, low blood pressure, colitis, anaemia, deformed feet and hands and gall-bladder disturbances. The condition may be caused by emotional stress, shock, injury, physical stress, hormonal imbalance, infection severe fright. Heredity factors are also be responsible for this disease.

Dietary cure

According to the present medical profession, there is no cure of arthritis. The patient must learn to live with it. Naturopathy, believes in dietetic cure of this disease. Most chronic arthritis patients are heavy eaters and often take food furnishing 3500 to 4000 calories.

As they cannot utilize all the starchy elements of this intake, toxins accumulate. An excessive acid waste results in the aggravation of prevalent joint condition. A low calorie diet consisting of about 2000 calories with minimum carbohydrate content is advisable. The diets include an adequate amount of phosphorus, iron, vitamins and calcium.

The diets of arthritis patient are alkaline in nature. It include vegetables and fruits for protection. Carbohydrates and proteins for energy. It may consist of two cooked vegetables and a couple of fresh raw vegetables in the form of salads. Cabbage, carrot, celery, cucumber, endive, lettuce, onion, radish, tomato, and watercress may be used for raw salad. The cooked vegetables may include cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, celery, mushroom, onions, peas, beans, spinach, squash, tomatoes and turnips.

Vegetable Juice Therapy

In serious cases, advise to patient on a vegetable juice therapy for a week. Green juice extracted from any green leafy vegetable mixed with celery, red beet juice. Carrot is specifically helpful in arthritis. The work of alkaline raw juices dissolves the accumulation of deposits around the other tissues and joints. Fresh pineapple is very important as the enzyme in bromelain. Fresh pineapple juice for reduces inflammation and swelling in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Raw Potato Juice Therapy

Harmful Foods

Some foods are harmful in arthritis and these must be exclude from the diets. These include all cheese except cottage cheese, sausages, preserved meats, sweet buns, cakes, pies, white bread and pastries, all soups and all salad dressings made from rice and white flour products and meat stock.

Ice-cream, sugar, tea, coffee, Candy, condiments and sweetmeats are avoided. Fruits allows in arthritis are oranges, lemons, bananas, pears, apples the various plums, pineapples, berries, melons and apricots.

Vitamins

Vitamin A and D play important role in preventing arthritis. Carrots, papayas, oranges, whole butter and milk, tomatoes, raw bananas are rich in Vitamin A and all green leafy vegetables. Vitamin D is chiefly obtained by sunlight. Sunlight is an important factor in the prevention of arthritis.

Constipation should be avoid as it poisons the system and adds to the irritation and inflammation of the joints. The light exercises such as walking is beneficial. Maintain a body weight is an important factor for preventing arthritis. Obesity place excess stress on weight-bearing joint. It interferes with the smooth functioning of muscles, tendons and ligaments.

The body always kept warm at all times. Joints should not be bandage tightly as this limits movement. It interferes with the free circulation of blood. There should be plenty of ventilation in the bedroom. Rest is very important for those suffering from arthritis. They should not overdo their work, exercise or recreational activities.
